Understanding the Medical Transcriptionist’s Job

Published by manager at 5:41 pm under medical transcription training

A medical transcriptionist’s job does not entail just converting verbal information to text. The medical transcriptionist gives meaning to the information, making it logical, relevant, and understandable.

There have been many speculations and discussions on how the voice recognition software can snatch away the medical transcriptionist’s job. However, the truth is that doctors have to work much harder to record their medical observations using the software. Moreover, the text produced by the software can never be 100% accurate. Given that the need for medical transcription comes from the time constraint doctors have, the voice recognition software cannot perform well, let alone beating human transcriptionists to the job.

What does a medical transcriptionist do?

  • He/she listens to audio files and filters the medical information from the audios.
  • He/she converts the medical information into text.
  • He/she logically analyzes the text and interprets it to make relevant medical records.

The job of a medical transcriptionist is far more complex than it sounds. Most of the time, an audio recording may have more irrelevant information. Also, interpreting doctor-speech is much more difficult than recognizing just medical terms.

Medical transcriptionists work with short turnaround times. It is the hard work that reaps them the rewards.

If you want to become a medical transcriptionist, analyze your aptitude before committing yourself to this career. This profession has many perks but it also makes high demands of you. Seek guidance from experts and take their feedback if you think you have what it takes to make it big in the medical transcription profession.
