Requirements in a medical transcriptionist-aspirant

The medical transcription profession requires great dedication and commitment. Despite having no formal eligibility requirements, the profession requires people with a certain aptitude. It is this aptitude that lays the foundation for a booming medical transcription career. The medical transcription training is also meant only for those who have the right aptitude. The absence of such an aptitude will render the training futile. So, what are the basic skills/virtues that the profession is looking for in a medical transcriptionist-aspirant? This post will look at some of such skills.

Good hearing
This characteristic is a must in a medical transcriptionist. It is this attribute that makes him/her fit for the medical transcription job.

Ability to work on one’s own
This is yet another virtue that a medical transcriptionist must possess in order to work. The medical transcription profession does not offer supervision or guidance at every step, leaving the medical transcriptionist to learn and work on his/her own.

Ability to meet deadlines on a daily basis
The medical transcription job has deadlines almost everyday. At times, the deadlines are within a few hours. The medical transcriptionist has to be alert at all times. He/she cannot afford to miss any deadline, making the medical transcription job very challenging.

Willingness to learn and research
The medical transcription profession requires that one keeps learning continuously. The knowledge cannot be stagnant if one wants to perform well as a medical transcriptionist. A medical transcriptionist is required to research for his/her current work and learn new things for the future.

Good command over English
One cannot become a good medical transcriptionist if he/she does not possess a good command over the English language and grammar.
