Medical Transcription for Mothers

Published by manager under work at home

Medical Transcription for at-home moms is a great career choice. With flexible schedules and being at home when the kids are not in school, or if you have a baby, you don’t have to sacrifice time in the office and paychecks. However, sometimes “work time” and “kid time” can clash. You are one person, yet it feels at times like you have to split yourself into two people in order to deal with it all. With planning, however, you can manage both, and still get dinner on the table at night.

First of all, always have a plan. Review your workload and form a plan of attack every week. How much work will you complete each day? Factor in interruptions from children or other at-home responsibilities. Setting manageable expectations will keep you focused. And once you meet your daily goal, you’ll enjoy time with your children that much more when you know you’re on track for the week.

Your kids will be thrilled to have you at home and will want your undivided attention. During the day, there will be times for play and times for work. Explain to your children that in order for you to be home with them, they need to adhere to a schedule. And reward them for their efforts. It may take some time for your schedule to mesh with theirs and work out, but stay firm – it’s well worth the effort.

In order to manage your at-home business, you may need to conduct meetings, make special client phone calls or complete rush jobs. In these cases, seeking the help of a trusted sitter is a smart career move. Factor in your sitter needs when creating your schedule at the beginning of the week.

While you work, keep kids busy with fun activities. For example, set up a play area where games, puzzles, books and toys are easily accessible. Consider an activity table and challenge your kids with exciting arts and crafts projects they can safely do while you work. And, of course, take full advantage of nap or movie times.

As you perfect your medical transcription skills, you’ll also improve your tactics for efficiently balancing work and family time. Every child is different, so creativity and patience is key when working at home.

Published by manager under work at home

You want to work from home as a Medical Transcriptionist, but you are not sure where to begin. That’s okay, because today, the MT field is so vast, resources are almost limitless. The first thing you need to do is find a place to get your MT education. Employers will almost exclusively hire transcriptionists who have completed some kind of formal training in the area, or who have experience.

Courses typically take several months to two years to complete, depending on the school chosen You could go to a University, Community College, Vocational School or Home Study). Many vocational schools include the cost of books and course materials in their tuition, which may be helpful after you have landed a job. If you already work in a medical field, and simply want to switch to working from home, you may only need to learn transcription, as you may already have the vocabulary you need, but think carefully, as a refresher course may not be an entirely bad thing either.

You can also take transcription courses at home. This option is more flexible but may be more challenging in other ways. Your selection of a course of study should depend on how you will best learn what you need to know.  You will need an assortment of reference books. Some you may receive with your training, but you may find you need others. You must also be capable of working on your own. On the other hand, if you want to work at home, that’s a skill you need.

Your home study course should offer you information on finding jobs when you have completed the course. You can also do research for yourself. The internet is your friend. Look up jobs on sites such as Girls Get Paid (if you’re a guy, there are plenty of sites for you too), where new Medical Transcription jobs for various skill levels are available and updated regularly.

Making Work From Home Transcribing More Comfortable

Published by manager under work at home

Working from home can be a wonderful thing! You get to make your own hours, you are not tied to a boss over your shoulder and you can watch your kids without having to pay for expensive babysitters or Daycare. But, while working from home can be great, it has its cons as well. Making your own hours in a hectic world can sometimes be a challenge when you are battling kids and phone calls and housework, and of course the lure of the TV. Thus, the important factor in all of this is to keep yourself happy.

Make sure your seating area is comfortable. Buy the best ergonomically engineered furniture you can afford. Consider purchasing an ergonomic keyboard and/or ergonomic mouse to help relieve forearm, wrist and finger pain. For the home-based worker it is a real necessity because if you can’t transcribe, chances are you aren’t earning any money. Most home-based workers do not have any kind of health or income insurance to rely on so must ensure they continue to have the ability to produce work. Following proper procedures to avoid work-related repetitive stress injury will ensure you have a long transcribing career.

Keep your work area as quiet as possible. Seasoned medical transcriptionists know how important it is to have their surroundings as quiet as possible. No doubt this is sometimes impossible because you work from home and have small children and pets to contend with, but do your best to explain to people this is your work time (though it is difficult to explain it to your pets, set up areas for them or feed them; whatever you need to do to keep them quiet). Fast, accurate transcription is most attainable when you can concentrate on the dictated words and virtually nothing else. While you are able to transcribe with ambient noise, speed and accuracy are almost always adversely affected.

Why Home-Based Medical Transcription is a Good Career Option

Published by manager under work at home

Didn’t I tell you earlier that home-based medical transcription may not be a good career option? Yes, I did. The home-based version of the profession is not for everyone. But that does not make the option bad. Let me tell you why it is a good career option.

You get to work from home! Now, most of us, some time or the other, want to work from home. You are comfortable and at ease when you are at home. You get to make your office space the way you prefer. Also, there is the promise of increased productivity.

As a home-based medical transcriptionist, you have the flexibility of choosing your work timings. You also get to choose how much work you want on your plate. As a freelancing transcriptionist, you also get to say ‘no’ to work you don’t like.

With your office at home, you don’t need to commute any longer. This not only saves your money and time, but it also does away with unnecessary harassment of traffic and crowd. And you do help the environment as well. No commuting means no car, which further means no pollution.

You can save on money being at home. And I am not just referring to saving the money you would otherwise spend on commuting. You don’t even have to invest in office wear. You’ll be surprised at how much money you save on this.

You get to save time. Since you no longer need to commute, you can use the time for your hobbies and your family.

Now, working from home is definitely great, but you must ensure that you can handle the responsibility before you start making an office at home.

However, take up home-based medical transcription only if you are sure you are disciplined enough to prioritize work even when at home. In today’s post, we will look into tips to enhance your productivity in the job at home.

It is important to avoid physical discomfort as much as possible. Get yourself a comfortable seat. Your posture can greatly affect the way you feel. A comfortable seat will ensure that you don’t add backache or neck pain to your stress. Avoid getting a pain in your wrists by using ergonomically-enhanced keyboard and mouse.

Dedicate your home-office only to work. Having a laptop gives you the flexibility of being mobile. However, avoid working in any place you fancy. Stick to your workspace; it will not only provide you with a proper, noise-free environment but will also help you focus and be productive.

It is important you take logical breaks. Avoid sitting in one place for too long. Take a break, walk around your house or garden after you finish a logical chunk of tasks.

Work only during your stipulated work hours. Yes, you have to work with a routine and a plan. Make sure you do not work beyond your fixed hours. And work only during the fixed hours. This will help you enjoy the perks of being at home.

Spend time with family and friends. Don’t let your work take over your personal life. Spend time with them on a regular basis. Being close to loved ones keeps stress at bay.

Finding Medical Transcription Work From Home

Published by manager under work at home

What is the biggest challenge you face when you choose home-based medical transcription? Distractions? Well, it definitely one of the biggest challenges, but there is something else I call the biggest challenge. It is ensuring a regular flow of work and income while being at home. You are your own boss at home, and it is up to you to get work for yourself. How do you go about it? Here are some simple but effective tips.

  • Join listings such as Craiglist. This list is popular and people prefer looking up services on this rather then searching for them through a search engine.
  • Publish ads of your services in the classified section of the local newspapers. The print is far from being dead. People still check the classifieds.
  • Get yourself listed in the yellow pages. Yes, those pages still exist, and work.
  • Approach the local clinics and hospitals. A visit to the nearest hospital may fetch you a big opportunity. Even if they don’t have something for you now, they will get in touch with you in future. So, leave a copy of your resume with them.
  • Submit your resume on job websites. This one is obvious. The first few offers may not be great but these job sites will open the door of opportunities for you.
  • Submit your resume to medical transcription companies. Go through the requirements of the medical transcription companies and send them our CV.

Hope this post helps in your hunt for medical transcription opportunities. If you would like to add to this list of tips, we are all ears.

Are You Right for Home-Based Medical Transcription?

Published by manager under work at home

The medical transcription profession is extremely flexible so much so that it lets you work from home, on all days. But are you sure you can handle the work from? What could be so difficult, you ask? Answer the questions below to find out if you are right for home-based medical transcription.

  • Can you work in isolation? If you can’t, you can’t work from home. Home-based medical transcription means working without company, without co-workers. While it may be comfortable for a day or two, not everyone can handle the isolation for a long term.
  • Can you provide for a home-office that’s secluded and noise-free? If you can’t, you should not work from home. Medical transcription requires tremendous focus. If your working space is not peaceful or frequented by the other members of the family or guests, you cannot focus for long hours.
  • Can you ensure the security of medical information while working at home? If you can’t, you should not become a home-based medical transcriptionist. Compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is very important irrespective of your place of work. If you cannot ensure HIPAA-compliance at home, you should not choose this profession.
  • Can you prioriize your work even when at home? If you prioritize domestic chores over work or turn the television on at any given opportunity, you are likely to make your work take a backseat at home. As a home-based medical transcriptionist, you cannot let yourself get distracted by anything unless you have completed your work. If you cannot guarantee dedication, don’t go for the home-based work.

So, do you think you are ready?

Are You Choosing Home-Based Medical Transcription For All the Wrong Reasons?

Published by manager under work at home

Comfort and flexibility are probably the two most important things that draw people to home-based medical transcription. Let’s look at why your reason of becoming a home-based medical transcriptionist may not be right.

Choosing home-based work to give priority to domestic responsibilities: The flexibility the job offers lures people into starting work from home. A job is a job irrespective of where you do it from. You cannot do justice to your work if you are going to prioritize your home chores over work.

Choosing home-based medical transcription to get enough time to relax: The comfort and the flexibility that home-based medical transcription offers make people believe they can relax. This leads to frequent distractions. They give in to simple temptations easily. If the television, the phone, a conversation, books vie for your attention when you have deadlines to meet, you have misunderstood the profession.

Choosing home-based work to avoid annoying bosses and coworkers: You should know that working in isolation is not very easy. You are required to not only deliver quality work but also handle crisis situations on your own. If you cannot work independently, you should not work from home.

Setting up home office in a random corner in your home: Home-based medical transcription does bring in cost savings, but that does not mean you should turn any corner in your home into your office. Your home office has to be noise free and out of others’ reach. If your office space is a hangout zone or frequented by family and guests, it is definitely not fit to be an office. It is important that you be equipped to handle home-based medical transcription before you commit to it. Cost savings don’t make sense when you are not earning.

Don’t base your decision of becoming a home-based medical transcriptionist solely on the comfort the job option offers; make sure you can do justice to the job.

Making Home-Based Medical Transcription Credible

Published by manager under work at home

When you work from home, you need to have your hands full of work all the time. And how will you ensure that you keep getting home-based medical transcription work regularly? By establishing credibility in your work. And how do you do that? Ensure high productivity and high quality. And ensure the security and confidentiality of all the data that passes through your hands. Here are some ways to build your credibility.

Create a home office that helps you be highly productive. It is important to plan your work if you want to deliver good work. Fix up the number of work hours you will work everyday. And stick to the plan. Avoid distractions at all costs during work hours. Don’t prioritize domestic responsibilities when your work is pending.

Take measures to ensure conformation to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines. You are no good if you are not HIPAA-compliant.

It is important you meet all deadlines irrespective of the work pressure. Say ‘no’ to more work if you already have too much on your plate. Remember, you cannot compromise on the quality of your work. You have to meet all medical transcription quality goals.

You will come across several instances of incomprehensible or incomplete recordings. Follow up properly. And flag responsibly. Inappropriate flagging is one of the biggest factors that ruin your goodwill.

Treat your client’s work with utmost sincerity. The medical records you create are of real people. If you take your work casually, you may end up impacting the safety of some patient somewhere. Be sincere and you will do well in medical transcription.

HIPAA-Compliance Adds Another Dimension to Home-Based Medical Transcription Challenge

Published by manager under work at home

Among the challenges of home-based medical transcription, the one that makes people the most unsure is probably HIPPA-compliance. Now, HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Among other things,  HIPAA requires that you keep medical information secure and confidential. In a medical transcription company, you just need to follow certain guidelines and the job will be done. But at home, you are responsible for taking measures to ensure the security and confidentiality of data. Here are a few guidelines to help you do that.

  • Update your anti-virus and firewall regularly. Failing to do so will put your computer at risk. This may lead to a situation where your data is corrupted or compromised.
  • Make sure you install the service packs of your operating system as and when they are released. This will help you avoid unnecessary problems.
  • Don’t use your work computer for anything else other than medical transcription work. And make sure it is not used by any one else. This computer should be completely dedicated to your work.
  • Make a habit of encrypting all e-mails that contain work-related information. This will help you keep the information confidential.
  • Get a secure FTP connection to transfer medical transcription files. Most of your interactions will be through the Net and you would not want a non-secure connection to transfer your work files.
  • If you have hard copies of medical documents, keep them under lock and key. If the papers are no longer needed, shred them.

Conforming to HIPAA is not easy when every aspect of medical transcription is your responsibility. Thus, medical transcriptionists who are interested in working from home should make sure they can handle it before they start making room for their home office.
